It happened again last week, according to Renesys, which reports that an incorrect BGP announcement by a small ISP in Nagoya, Japan triggered a wave of errant updates. This ripple effect was related to a weakness in updated code for a version of Cisco’s IOS operating system for routers. Cisco promptly posted a security advisory and patch. 

The incident prompted commentary from James Cowie of Renesys on the potential for future trouble due to software updates.

“The global mesh of BGP-speaking routers that we call the Internet has inherent vulnerabilities that stem from the software quality and policy weaknesses of its weakest participants, and the amplification potential of its best-connected participants,” Cowie wrote on the Renesys blog. “Running sloppy software at the edge of the routing mesh (in enterprises, say) is unlikely to give anyone the ability to propagate large amounts of instability or partition the Internet. But closer to the core, I think we have a serious problem to contemplate.

“Remember, if you can get just one provider to listen to you, and not filter your announcements, you can get your message into the ear of just about every BGP-speaking router on the planet within about thirty seconds,” Cowie continued. “And if some subpopulation of those routers can be reset, they act as amplifiers for your instability. Power law outage-size distributions are not a myth — they are a logical consequence of the structure of the Internet, the importance of a few key participants in carrying global traffic, and their reliance for interconnection on technologies that are clearly still in the shaking-out-the-obvious-bugs mode.”

The good news is that disruptive routing errors are noticed and resolved in fairly short order. But the “how could this happen” factor remains pretty high.

Whether getting rid of an old computer or just making a clean start for your favourite hard drive — do hard drives even get to be honoured as “favourites”? — it’s important to wipe it clean.

With one’s and zero’s and data recovery, though, it’s harder than you might think to make sure that your personal data is gone forever.

This collection of drive bombs showcases four free programs for internal and external drive data deletion, as well as files and folders on the fly.

Eraser
For shredding individual files or folders, or entire drives, Eraser reminds us of an ugly but effective hit man. Also known as Heidi Eraser, after its publisher, the program’s interface is plain and unadorned, but also easy enough to figure out and because of its simplicity will work with operating systems as old as Windows 95.

Mouse-over tool tips help identify tasks that the generic icons take you to, and a native Windows Explorer context menu addition makes one-shot shredding easy despite the lack of a simple deletion button in the main interface. Otherwise, when deleting files both large and small, you’ll need to first add the file or folder to the spreadsheet display. Drives can be added to the shred list in the same way. Users can schedule shreddings, too — handy for routinely wiping free disk space. Four secure government-sanctioned deletion algorithms keep those deletions dead, including algorithms from the US Department of Defense, the default Guttmann method, Pseudorandom Data, and DBAN for hard drives.

DBAN
That brings us to DBAN (Darik’s Boot and Nuke), which wipes internal hard drives only. It comes in two flavours of data-destroying pain: one to be installed on CD or DVD, and one for floppies or USB keys. Once you’ve got the program installed on the proper removable media, you need to make sure that your computer will boot from that drive. If it needs adjustment, this can be done from your BIOS. The Autonuke option will delete all detectable hard drives, including the C drive. Interactive mode allows you to choose which hard drive or partitions thereof you’d like to obliterate. Once you’ve chosen what you’d like to destroy, F10 will start the process.

DBAN’s not for the timid. Since it runs separate from the operating system, the UI is basic and similar to what your BIOS looks like.

File Shredder
File Shredder’s also seen some good notices. Covered in a drastically more modern interface than Eraser, File Shredder looks like a file deletion-specific version of Windows Explorer. It supports shredding files both individually and as a group, aided by simple commands such as Add File and Add Folder. Once you’ve chosen your targets, you can choose from five shredding algorithms, ranging from simple one pass to the Department of Defense 5220-22.M to the Guttman algorithm. The Disk Wiper mode can clean free space on a hard drive.

Despite its modernity, File Shredder lacks a scheduler and offers no hooks into the recycle bin, which means that files that are already there must be dealt with by hand before they can be shredded. Unlike Eraser, it doesn’t do full drives, either.

CCleaner
CCleaner also contains a hidden shredding component. Go to Options, then Settings, and choose Secure File Deletion at the bottom of the window. From there, you can adjust the number of overwrites the program will make on deleted files, from the standard one pass up through the Guttmann 35 passes. Also included are the three-pass Department of Defense standards and the National Security Agency seven-pass standard. CCleaner is probably the most user-friendly of the options in this collection, but it’s really only for shredding files that get detected by the program. For more selective shredding, the other options are recommended.

Zilla Data Nuker
We’re including Zilla Data Nuker more as a warning than an actual recommendation. You should only use Zilla Data Nuker if it’s version 2 or earlier. Version 3 installs the Relevant Knowledge spyware and doesn’t give you the choice of opting out. However, older versions don’t, and so they can stay on the table even though they don’t include this horrible business practice.

As a program, Zilla Data Nuker works well, with multiple algorithms and a good-looking interface. Included is a scheduler and the abilities to shred via context menu and to shred an entire drive. If it wasn’t for the lack of the Guttmann algorithm and the business practices that the publisher now endorses, we’d recommend Zilla more strongly. As it is, give it a pass unless you’ve got no other option.

With all of these programs, we found that file or drive size was a more restrictive determinant on shredding speed than anything else. These are definitely programs for users with patience: if you’re truly concerned with sweeping away your data footprints, you probably shouldn’t be too worried about how long it takes to wipe out any trace that you were there.

The xp-AntiSpy is a little utility that lets you disable some built-in update and authentication features in Windows XP.

For example, there’s a service running in the background which is called Automatic Updates. I don’t know what this service transfers from my machine to other machines on the internet, especially the MS ones. So I play it safe and disable such functions. If you like, you can even disable these functions manually, by going through the System and checking or unchecking some checkboxes. This will take you approximately half an hour. But why wast time when a little neat utility can do the same in 1 minute? This utility was successfully tested by lots of users, and was found to disable all the known ‘Suspicious’ Functions in Windows XP. It’s customizable, but comes up with the Default settings, which are recommended.

He says that scarcity drives all decisions, and that what’s scarce today in IT has shifted away from processing power, storage capacity and network bandwidth to time and money.  This will lead to the end of non-cloud IT as we know it.

Admittedly, I’m a glass-half-full kind of guy. But I wonder if Steve’s view isn’t a bit too pessimistic.

The other side of scarcity in Chris Anderson’s theory is abundance.  Abundance in IT is good – it makes data virtually “free” and opens the door to new applications and new opportunities that spawn a whole new level of demand for data. Before you know it, there’s a shortage of storage, processing or bandwidth – albeit at a lower price.

I do agree with Steve that efficient management is the key. But it applies to technology being implemented in home-grown data centers just as much as in the Cloud.  This Equallogic example from Steve himself is a case in point.

Mr. Duplessie is on to something, but the pendulum will continue to swing to and fro.  In no time at all, management will become abundant and storage will be scarce yet again.

The problems began late Wednesday afternoon as temperatures in Paris rose into the upper 90s. “Multiple chillers that support the second floor failed, and the standby chiller system did not start in time to absorb the load,” Michel Brignano, General Manager of Equinix France, wrote in an incident report which was posted to the FrNOG list.

“This impacted temperatures on the second floor and had indirect effect on the ground floor as well,” Brignano continued. “The specific causes of the failures are still under investigation but there appear to have been component/subsystem failures in at least two of the three primary chiller systems supporting the second floor. At this time, we can not say definitively whether the failures were related or not.”

Temperatures Rise in Data Center
Dedicated server host SD-France reported that inlet temperatures inside the Paris 2 data center soared above 50 degrees C (122 degrees Fahrenheit). French web host and registrar Gandi had to discontinue all services it hosted at the Equinix Paris 2 center, leaving some customers offline for as long as eight hours. “This impacts pretty much a quarter of our hosting and all sitemaker services as well as one of our DNS clusters,” Gandi said in its incident report.

Outside temperatures in Paris reached 97 degrees Wednesday, and 90 degrees on Thursday as Equinix staff continued the effort to restore the full cooling capabilities for the Paris 2 data center. “Equinix engineers and supplier support personnel were dispatched to the site (Wednesday) evening and continue to work on the systems,” Brignano wrote.

“The full site returned to target temperature early (Thursday) morning using a combination of some primary capacity and the standby system (which subsequently started). While returning to target temperature this morning was important, we were well aware that the system would be stressed again during the day and have been working to get the failed systems repaired and to undertake other interim steps to avoid a recurrence.

Recovery Work Continuing
“At this point, one of the failed systems has been partially repaired and is providing some cooling supply,” Brignano added in his update at midday Thursday. “Work is continuing on the other units and additional engineers are en route to the site to diagnose and repair the units. Because the site is operating with less than full operating infrastructure, on-site engineers are closely monitoring key cooling equipment and the UPS units. In addition, we are using a number of tactics to maximize the performance of the cooling equipment that is operating.”

SD-France shared its unhappiness about the outage in its public report to customers. “With regard to this last incident, what disappointed us the most is the indisputable lack of communication, transparency and reactivity of Equinix,” SD-France wrote.

The Equinix Paris 2 outage in July was caused by the human error of a vendor conducting routine maintenance on a UPS system, according to Equinix. The error caused one UPS unit to go offline, dropping power to a third of the PA2 center for one minute.
